Hello everyone! This is Krystal Sato, Ebetsu City Coordinator for International Relations.

We held an online exchange session on Sunday, March 12, between Gresham High School in Gresham, Oregon and students from five high schools in Ebetsu. There were 10 participants in the online exchange: five students and one teacher from Gresham High School, and one student each from Ebetsu High School, Nopporo High School, Oasa High School, Towa No Mori Sanai High School, and Ritsumeikan Keisho High School. In addition, a Japanese teacher from Gresham High School and Ebetsu Sister City Committee President Masaki Tatsuta attended to offer words of encouragement.

The High School Student Exchange Program has been canceled for the past three years due to COVID-19, so we decided to hold an online exchange session instead. This was the first exchange session, so the students started with their self-introductions. The students of Gresham introduced themselves in Japanese, while the students of Ebetsu introduced themselves in English. The students talked about their hobbies, favorite games and anime, school clubs, and their dreams for the future. After introductions, the students split into two groups to talk more. They actively mixed English and Japanese to communicate with each other, and seemed to enjoy their conversations. The students made new friends, and in turn contributed to sister city exchange.

The online exchange was a very fun and meaningful experience for all of the participants. It was a great opportunity for everyone to deepen their understanding of foreign cultures. We plan to hold two more online exchange sessions in the near future.
